This guitar lesson is for absolute beginners. It covers five simple steps that you can use to play your first song on the guitar. NO previous skill is required. This first guitar lesson assumes you haven’t even picked up a guitar before. It’s intended to be the very first guitar lesson you use as a beginner guitarist.

The five steps in this lesson are:

0:34 — Guitar Fundamentals
2:50 — Basic Guitar Strumming
8:06 — Basic Guitar Chords
12:24 — Changing Chords Smoothly
14:35 — Playing Your First Song

You’ll start by learning some fundamentals like how to hold the guitar and three simple numbering systems for the guitar. After that you’ll learn how to strum the guitar and how to play your first guitar chords. Then, for step four, Nate shares tips on how to change between chords smoothly as this is a common challenge for beginners. Finally, you’ll learn how to play your very first song.

We have selected two relatively straightforward chords to get started. They still sound fantastic, though, and will remain valuable no matter how advanced you end up becoming! Be sure to memorise the names of the chords as you learn them, as this will help with your understanding of musical theory.

When \»fretting\» (using your fingers to press the strings down on a fret) chords you need to bear the following things in mind:

1. Keep your thumb on the back of the neck
2. Make a bridge with your fingers
3. Be sure to apply pressure with the tips of your fingertips
4. Push down nice and hard!
Fretting strings for longer periods of time can be uncomfortable or even painful at first! Don’t worry, as you play more and more you’ll find you soon adjust and will be able to play for as long as you like in perfect comfort.
